Motor-Evoked Pain Increases Force Variability in Chronic Jaw Pain

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is the most common cause of severe long-term pain and physical disability, affecting more than 50 million people in the United States.9,22 Movement can exacerbate pain, and pain can modify movement.6,19,24,40,49,61,63,75 Understanding how pain leads to changes in motor control is fundamental to understanding the relationship between chronic pain and physical disability. In the current study, we used jaw force production as a model to understand how motor-evoked pain leads to changes in force production in a cohort of patients with chronic jaw pain.
