SIGMA-1 Receptor Gene Variants Affect the Somatosensory Phenotype in Neuropathic Pain Patients

Neuropathic pain arises as a direct consequence after lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system.35 Typically it is characterized by positive symptoms such as ongoing or evoked pain as well as negative symptoms like reduced sensitivity in the affected skin area and adjacent areas.2,26 Globally, 0.9% to 17.9% of adults are suffering from chronic pain with neuropathic features.8,16,36 However, there is only a limited number of drugs with proven efficacy in treatment of neuropathic pain often also causing considerable adverse side effects.
