Chronic widespread pain (CWP), which has been defined by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) as pain that has persisted for at least 3 months and is localized in the right as well as the left side of the body, above as well as below the waist plus in the axial skeleton,40 affects approximately 10 to 12% of the population.22 Fibromyalgia (FM) has previously been considered as a subgroup of CWP, with concomitant signs of widespread mechanical hyperalgesia. In 1990, the ACR approved classification criteria for FM, defining FM as CWP in combination with pain or tenderness in at least 11 of 18 well defined tender points.
