The number of orthopedic surgeries performed each year is growing rapidly worldwide.38,46,88,119,153 For example, by 2030, total knee and hip arthroplasties are expected to reach 3.48 million (673% increase) and 572,000 (174% increase), respectively, in the United States alone.88 In Australia, the demand for knee replacement surgeries has increased by 150% over the past 10 years.10 Growth is expected to continue as the world’s population continues to age and rates of obesity and osteoarthritis rise.
